Camping
Birch Bend is a primitive campground, which includes 320 mostly
timber-covered acres on a nearly uninhabited lake in northern Minnesota. The lake is 30-35 feet deep, with sandy beaches and a variety of fish. The property
includes about 30 campsites for use by both groups and families. An open-air
shelter provides a place to gather. A swimming raft adds to the enjoyment of
the beach in summer. The property has it's own fresh water supply - you'll use a hand pump to
bring it to the surface. Also, propane refrigerators are available for food storage
and pit toilets are a low-tech amenity.
Birch Bend is owned by the Pine Bend Association, and is available to scout
troops and other youth groups interested in a unique outdoor experience.
Come to Birch Bend for a weekend in spring and you might be lucky enough to
see the Trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) or even a patch of Yellow Lady Slipper (Cypripedium calceolus). Come in summer and
refresh yourself in the clear, clean spring fed lake. Visit in fall and
enjoy the rich gold of the Birches against the deep green of the Pine trees.
Up for a winter camping experience? You'd have the company of other Pine
Bend members who love the pristine beauty of Birch Bend wrapped in snow.
We expect that you'll meet your organization's requirements for camping
trips, including providing appropriate supervision of young people and
providing your own Water Safety Instructor (WSI) supervision at the beach if
you plan water activities. Please be considerate of the other Pine Bend
members, since you'll be sharing the property with them. There is no fee for camping at Birch Bend so we also ask that you lend a hand with a service project while you're at Birch Bend. A list of suggested projects is posted at camp and equipment and supplies will be
provided.
Bring your own camping equipment (tents, etc.), food and other provisions and
your enthusiasm and love of the outdoors. We'll provide the sparkling lake,
breathtaking sunsets, peaceful twilights, a place to sing and share ghost
stories around the campfire and an assortment of wildlife to delight you.
Come to Birch Bend. We're pleased to share its wonders with you and with
your young people. For more information, please contact us.
